One thing every dining room needs is tables and chairs. Though you may just assume this is true, I have seen many people do without them. Some families choose to eat dinner in front of the television, and they don’t have a lot of company.

Because of this, they skip the investment in a good dining room set. This probably isn’t a good idea, though eating in front of the television on occasion never hurt anyone. In my home, however, I like to know that we eat together at the table most of the time.

Decor story number two…

A personal note about tables and chairs, how they relate to housekeeping setup for younger readers. I am at the point in my life where I have worked in my career, gotten married, raised a family and are watching them begin their careers. Our retirement years are now what we are concentrating on getting ready for. I do not know where all the time has gone, but I do realize how short life really is.

We have two children a son and daughter. Our son has completed college, obtained a job, gotten married and recently purchased his first home. He and his wife are discussing having a family, which will put my husband and me into our grand parenting years.

Our daughter has completed college and is looking to buy a house. She has always been practical and has decided that a house would be a better investment than renting. She has located a small home that she can afford, but she will have few finances left to furnish it. She asked me if I could help her locate inexpensive furniture.

We discussed looking at second hand stores, especially for tables and chairs. She has a love seat and chair that she used in college that is still in good shape. Each of the children took there bedroom furniture when they left for college and my husband and I replaced it with new in our home.

Her room mate had the tables and chairs so she has never owned a set. She does not want her home to look pieced together, but she is afraid to go into debt any further than she already has with her mortgage. She does have a good job, but she is the newest person in the company and if there would be cut backs she would be the first to be let go.

In one of the used furniture stores we visited we found a nice tables and chairs set. The table stretched out and seated eight people. However without the leaves it was a nice size table for a serving of four. It had two captain’s chairs and four straight chairs.

She did not think she would have room for this cheap dining set. I told her that she could put the four straight chairs around the table and buy cushions for the captain’s chairs and put them in her living room.

This would give her extra seating in the living room space and if she needed the chairs when entertaining she would have them. The tables and chairs were in good shape and also had a small china cabinet that matched.

A sale is a sale so ..

Finally, a smart buying decision. She bought the cheap dining chairs and table. We gave her the cabinet as a house warming present. Now, all she needs is a better couch to go with her tables and chairs and cabinet.

A new dinette set can spruce up any kitchen decor but we had one little problem.. Choosing new kitchen table and chairs everyone liked. Here’s the rest of the decorating story.

For some time, our family used an old drop leaf table. It had worked well enough for us for many years, but it was definitely showing its age.

What we really want

We had been talking about new kitchen tables and chairs for several months before we started trying to pick one out. Everyone had a different idea.

I wanted a classic wooden kitchen table and chairs, but my husband had a very different idea. He wanted a retro kitchen table and chairs meant to look like a 1960s piece of furniture. I thought this was an atrocious idea, but what my children came up with was even worse.

Finally, we decided that the only thing to do was to go to the store together and look for a kitchen dinette set. There were kitchen tables and chairs of all descriptions, styles and colors. We had very specific needs for our set.

There was a certain size that it had to be, and it could not be any bigger or else it would not fit in the space available. Nonetheless, there were many models available.

Too many kitchen tables — Too many wooden and modern chairs

It would have been easier if they had had a smaller kitchen table and chairs selection. I am not a big believer in having a lot of choices to make, especially when there is a whole committee to make them. Sometimes, it is easier to be offered one or two good choices and a bad one.

You make one of the good choices, feel good about yourself for not making the bad one, and you are on your way. If every possible design of kitchen table and chairs is available, you will never get anything accomplished, especially if you have your family with you.

The awful truth ..

What we ended up with was a kitchen table and chairs that no one was completely happy with. It is true that the model that we chose was pretty close to my own vision, but it was not close enough to satisfy me.

The kid  had little power except to veto the kitchen table and chairs that I first tried to pick out, and the one that my husband wanted. All in all, it was a very unpleasant experience.

Normally, I feel good about shopping online or in regular stores for new furniture but this time I feel terrible. I’m so exhausted with the ordeal of picking out kitchen tables and chairs that I never want to have to go through it again!
